Kareena Kapoor Khan’s Style Evolution Makes A Case For Glamour And Drama

Kareena Kapoor Khan

Spotlight on Kareena Kapoor Khan aka Bebo aka the woman single-handedly driving the national sales of kajal, given her mastery at acing kohl rimmed eyes. We’ve adored her & the many characters she’s wonderfully essayed over the years – from the sassy clap backs of Poo to the cheery and relatable streak of the much loved Geet.

The grandeur of her cinematic journey is akin to her sartorial history, something we as fans cherish & celebrate and regularly pin to our mood board to steal for a wedding later. Her style has been interesting to watch, sure there have been some hiccups but for the most part, she’s got everyone heading to garment shops to replicate her looks.

Let’s take a look at her style journey over the decades:

This beige top with the oh so glaring cutout, is remniscent of the aughts in the best possible way. Cherry picked from Bebo’s peak glam era, the gem encrusted belt & the low-rise jeans are all the inspiration you need, to take a trip back to the raging aesthetics of Bollywood’s tryst with Y2K.

After the surprising decision of eschewing the usual lehenga for her wedding to Saif, Kareena turned to her mother-in-law’s nikkah outfit – a rust coloured sharara with a green paneling at the hem. The bhopali joda was also passed down to Sharmila Tagore by her mother-in-law & was truly refreshing to see a mainstream Bollywood actress rummage through family heirlooms for an outfit that spoke volumes about values.

The year was 2012 & the month, November. I was 11 then. It had just been 25 days since Kareena’s own wedding, when she was papped attending the wedding reception of filmmaker Rohit Shetty’s sister Mahek Shetty. I picked up an edition of Mumbai Mirror that said something on the lines of ‘red hot sindoor making a comeback.’ And I vividly remember thinking to myself, “Dang! She’s cool.”

It’s imperative that we ordain Kareena Kapoor Khan as the OG trendsetter when it comes to airport looks, as she was a founding member of this esteemed pool. Always seen carrying an accommodating tote whilst wearing stylish but comfortable ensembles, she set the bar high, even while flying.

During her first pregnancy, Kareena Kapoor Khan turned showstopper for Sabyasachi, at the grand finale of Lakme Fashion Week 2016. Wearing a muted green set from the design stalwart’s ‘Illuminate’ collection, it’s safe to say that the tabloids & paparazzi went home satisfied that day. Crowds were gasping & jaws were on the floor.

This one’s for the books. In a navy blue bandhgala suit by designer Raghavendra Rathore, it was here where Kareena’s prowess at embodying the spirit of androgynous dressing was cemented. Sculptural & royally suave, the middle parted hair & the brooches did a phenomenal job of complementing the strong silhouette subtly.

As if the news of Kareena Kapoor Khan attending the finale episode of Koffee With Karan alongside Priyanka Chopra wasn’t big enough – we saw her blaze the sets in a maroon, sequinned gown with a flounce cascading gracefully, cinching at the waist. She knows her silhouettes well, & thus promises a cent percent delivery rate.

An LFW ramp frequent, Kareena Kapoor Khan brought the curtains down at Lakme Fashion Week Winter/Festive 2018 for designer Monisha Jaising. The iridescent, micro-pleated floor length gown was her armour of choice, and a nod the ultra-glam sartorial persona of Bebo. The ‘no accessorizing’ route here, proved triumphant as this led to all the focus being diverted to the fabulous making of the gown.

For a Diwali party at long-standing pal Karan Johar’s residence, Kareena Kapoor Khan stunned in a rama-green, Mashru silk sari with a red selvedge by Raw Mango. She also donned a statement chain necklace, encrusted with an emerald pendant & that my friends, is a masterclass in acing saris in a fuss-free, simple way.

Styled by stylist extraordinaire Rhea Kapoor, Bebo wore an iconic pantsuit by New-York based label Peter Do. With power shoulders & uncanny slits originating from the lapel, curving up to the back, this new-age silhouette reinterpretation is something we’d like to see other celebs dip their toes in.
