Remember all the Humsafar frenzy back in the day? Well, all thanks to my grandmom’s unabated efforts to get me to binge watch her favourite regional telenovelas and soaps, I too, was a huge fan. And that was my introduction to Pakistani actress Mahira Khan. Then came Raees and the rest is history. Mahira Khan recently joined forces with acclaimed Indian designer Sawan Gandhi for his ethereal new campaign titled ‘Monochromatic Magic.’
When asked about his collaboration with Khan, Sawan gushed, “I’ve been a fan of Mahira from the time I watched Humsafar and Raees, so this has been a dream in the making. My design language has always had a contemporary take on traditional silhouettes, a vision synonymous with Mahira’s persona. She defines luxury with the most graceful, understated sensibility, and this is something we immediately resonated with.”
Having seen a dramatic surge in demand, Sawan Gandhi’s fame is directly tied to Bollywood’s love for the designer. Thus, banking on a globally loved superstar for this celebrity-focused campaign was imperative, we reckon. A first for him, as well. Pavit Gujral, an award-winning Dubai-based jewellery designer and gemologist, has also been roped in to design jewellery in tandem with the collection’s sensibilities. Dipped in brilliant hues, the multidimensional designer gets inspiration from a love of nature, the beauty in chaos, and a profound connection to the animal kingdom.
“Every collection has a new perspective, but I also carry my own trademark style, something that people identify the brand with. Mahira Khan is the perfect muse, and to me the most special part of shooting with her was the on ground experience. Her inherent understanding of fashion, designs and craftsmanship is evident in her effortless grace in the pictures, she is like a dream for any designer!” he added.
In the campaign, Mahira Khan is seen wearing four monochrome looks – sarees with elaborate needlework, an open sherwani jacket on a saree, and an ivory gold lehenga with an embroidered net veil. His design philosophy is reflected in the integration of traditional silhouettes with contemporary components, which offers a new take on classic fashion inspired by cultures around the world. Each costume has been hand stitched for hours, and the collection took more than four months to create.
Expounding more on this alliance, he stated, “I’ve always enjoyed producing outfits that make people feel attractive. With a muse like Mahira Khan, the process was effortless. Our vision sparked an instant connection with the celebrity, making the process a creative dream. We integrated elements that bring out both cultures brilliantly through design.”
The collection will soon be available in Sawan Gandhi’s Delhi and Hyderabad boutiques, as well as online.
