Princess Diana aka Princess of Wales lives on forever. Immortalised via numerous mediums, our unanimous admiration for her remains steadfast. I was born 4 years after her untimely demise and yet, her nonconforming persona has had considerable impact on girls my age.
And as for me, who identifies as a raging fashion geek, I’ve always looked up to Princess Diana’s impeccably sophisticated style for inspiration. Her radical fashion choices led to much ridicule and chit chat amongst those with ample spare time, back in the 90s. Did she care? Absolutely not.
Her fashion fitspo ranged from sharp pantsuits and high-end evening gowns to beautifully tailored jackets, which now enjoy a cult following amongst many. Me being the foremost patron. Let’s take a look at her best style moments where she rocked a skirt-suit (her go-to outfit) like there’s no tomorrow:
This high octane, purple satin number by Bruce Oldfield surely transports us all to the 80s’ disco glamour memo. Princess Diana wore this for a concert back in ’85 and honestly, we wouldn’t mind slipping this on even now, in 2022.
While touring Hampshire, this classic cream and muted blue set saw the light of the day. With an impressive construction on the blazer, especially with the Queen Anne neckline and curved hem, this piece became a raging favourite and how!
Aye Aye Captain! On her visit to Sandhurst Military Academy, she was photographed in this all white ensemble with a symmetric gold piping on the blazer. Talk about acing the theme!
This summery flax yellow set gelled well with the pink hat by Philip Somerville on her outing to Cameroon. The round gold studs added ample character and undoubtedly elevated the look with of course, Princess Diana’s charm adding in plenty of charm.
Diana was a patron of the Chicken Shed Theatre Company and attended their Charity Rock Concert back in 1991. This multicolored satin piece made the cut and the velvet of the blazer fit seamlessly with the occasion.
This Catherine Walker gem in pink made the cut for when she visited Sicily for the Royal Tour of Italy. The knife pleats at the lower half of the skirt was a great design decision as it added ample demureness to the set whilst staying true to the romantic aura of the city.
Photographed with a young Prince William while leaving Windsor Chapel’s Easter service, Princess of Wales was spotted wearing a yellow longline blazer with a crisply pleated skirt underneath. Opting for the black stockings and the gold pipe necklace was a sartorially wise choice that stole the spotlight, for sure.
For her Australian tour in 1996, Princess Diana chose a well fitted lapel-less skirt set and finished it off with a tiered pearl choker.
Talk about monochromatic acing. We need a minute to recover from this breathtaking styling masterpiece. The heels, the bag, the blazer and the studs. It was bound to be a success from the word go.
Reminiscent of the tragedy marred pink dress worn by Jackie Kennedy, Diana wore this phenomenally tailored pink skirt suit for the rehearsal of The Nutcracker.
Photographed in 1992 for D’s Egypt tour, she went down the beige route in this safari-suit inspired set and a wide belt to add dimension. The buttons were noticeably large unlike her heels and that my friends, is a lesson in choosing comfort over style when vacationing.
For arriving at a naval base in La Spezia, Diana opted for this nautical chic piece by Catherine Walker along with a hat by Kangol. The construction on the coat coupled with the systematic alignment of stripes is laudable.
Papped with her baby boys William and Harry, this sand hued number ranks supremely high on her sartorial calendar. With a distinctive white yoke placement and a flat peplum attachment, we collectively bob our heads in unison and LOVE this look.
