The renowned fashion label Satya Paul has been continuously reinvented since its establishment in 1985, leading the way in cutting-edge prints and transforming the traditional sari. Under the creative direction of Rajesh Pratap Singh since June 2021, the brand has entered a new phase, retaining its audacious spirit while adopting a more modern and approachable strategy.
Beginning as a retailer in the late 1960s, the late Satya Paul became a significant figure in the fashion industry. Among his innovative endeavours was supplying upscale Indian handloom goods to retail establishments in Europe and the US. Debuting his eponymous label in 1986, he gained popularity for his revolutionary digital print saris. This heritage serves as the cornerstone of the brand’s standing as a trendsetter.
The current creative director, Rajesh Pratap Singh, is giving Satya Paul’s visually focused style a fresh lease. His method is to take the brand’s nitty-gritty and modernise it while preserving the audacious spirit in each design. Singh’s broader vision extends beyond fashion; it involves working with Indian craft clusters and artisans to preserve traditional craftsmanship and generate employment.
Satya Paul’s Emporio Home
The brand’s vision of subtle luxury, realised through a captivating blend of exquisite weaves, prints, embroidery, sensual materials, and flawless craftsmanship, is personified at the Satya Paul Signature Store at DLF Emporio, which is fashioned like an actual egg which emerged in December ’23. The goal of space, according to Rajesh Pratap Singh, Creative Director of Satya Paul, is “to be both experimental and nurturing.”
The absence of sharp edges creates a smooth and seamless environment, inviting visitors to explore fragmented circles that pose a philosophical question about beginnings and endings. The egg is also monolithic and meditative; the latter quality was often used to describe the founder of the brand, Mr. Satya Paul himself.
Framework Synthesis
But inside, colour bursts bring life to the space, with print being an integral part of the brand’s DNA. The selection of materials, like terrazzo, a composite material made with marble, granite, glass, or quartz chips set into cement, is consistent with the brand’s philosophy of viewing familiar and local elements from a global, unexpected perspective. More than just a colour, the signature pink that welcomes guests captures the essence of the brand with a hint of gentle brightness and cosmopolitanism.
Acid Flowers and Delhi-Kyoto Non-Stop, two of the label’s most recent edits, demonstrate its dedication to fusing disparate cultural narratives. The former artfully combines the rich customs of India and Japan, taking cues from gardens, yakuza tattoos, the Sakura season, and Japanese woodblocks. This dreamy edit features playful saris, co-ord sets, shirts, and dresses in 37 styleways.
Exotic flowers, vibrant colours, and a sprinkling of crystals define each creation, offering a perfect blend of sophistication and spontaneity appropriate for various occasions. The Acid Flowers collection, on the other hand, encourages wearers to intertwine with the eternal appeal of nature in it’s forty-nine renditions.
The craftsmanship that is exhibited in the brand’s stores is central to its identity. The patterns easily transition from day to night, giving wearers a sense of independence and freedom. In addition to being a trailblazer in the fashion industry, Satya Paul is dedicated to supporting local artists and narrating an international story.
