On Monday afternoon, Timothée Chalamet was spotted filming his latest film Marty Supreme on the streets of New York City. This isn’t the first time the Oscar-nominated actor has been papped over the past week of filming. Directed by Josh Safdie (famously, the director of Uncut Gems), Marty Supreme is an A24 film set in the 1950s, with Timothée playing a ping pong pro. Details are, at this stage, pretty slim, but the set photos have already got us intrigued.
Though it was the retro cabs and conservatively dressed women in the background that first tipped me off that this was a movie set in the ’50s, the setting also explains his style. Clad in olive pleated trousers, a white tank top, and an oversized button-down shirt, Timothée is seen chaotically racing around the streets carrying an oversized bowling bag. He appears to be running away from someone or in a rush to get wherever he’s going (perhaps, a ping pong tournament?).
With a slight sheen of sweat, effortlessly coiffed hair, a well-worn black leather belt, and silver accessories, this one chaotic race through the streets is all it took for Timothée to immediately become my summer 2024 style inspiration.
If I’m being honest, I’ve always felt fairly neutral about Timothée. Of course, he has plenty of charm, is an extremely talented actor, and is widely considered to be a heartthrob. Not to mention, a style icon in his own right. I’m not disputing any of this. He was just never my charming and wildly talented heartthrob with incredible style — and he still isn’t, but he is quite suddenly the person I’m looking to for inspiration for my summer wardrobe.
There are a few key elements that cemented these photos of Timothée at the centre of my mood board for the upcoming warmer months.
The slightly rumpled look is, firstly, a whole summer mood, making it look as though he was once buttoned up and tucked in, but left work for the pub and realised it was far hotter outside than he realised from the safety of his air-conditioned office. It’s this undone look that makes it so perfect for summer. The wide-leg pleated trousers won’t crowd the legs on a sweaty day, and allow for a breeze to pass through. The white tank top is a trend that has already stamped its place as a 2024 staple, thanks in part to Charlie XCX adopting it as part of her signature brat look and also every luxury designer creating its own take on the logo white tank top.
The billowing button-down, worn here as a cover-up, is a summer essential, not only for its effortless stylings but also for its UV protection (and I am nothing if not a sun-safe girlie). We only have to look to Prada and Miu Miu’s viral oversized bowling, Boston-style bags to know that’s another trend that has reemerged in 2024, and Timothée wears it so well as he bustles through the streets of New York, reminding me that it’s about time I finally bought myself a large bag to tote all my necessities to the office this summer.
I’m willing to overlook the shoes since a black runner and trouser combo isn’t quite my style (though power to you if it’s yours), and I’m unlikely to judge my worn leather belt quite so harshly after seeing the way it adds to his effortless style on set.
Though the outfit may be styled for a 1950s setting, it’s obvious that it is once again perfectly on-trend in 2024, so don’t mind me while I rock this outfit on rotation this summer. Oh, we’re so back.
