Sonam Kapoor is on a roll. One simple scroll through her Instagram account will give you a glimpse into the starry life of the the Neerja actress, who in the last couple of weeks has given us stunning head-to-toe couture looks. Sonam — with help from her sister and stylist Rhea — has a knack for picking figure-flattering ensembles that work well on her svelte frame. And this time is no different — Sonam Kapoor’s statement sleeves and exaggerated shoulders show her love for the Spring Summer 2018 trend (check out A-listers like Alia Bhatt and Deepika Padukone who’re also sporting it).
Voluminous sleeves, however, first came into fashion in the 15th century, when dressing became exaggerated — long sleeves, trailing gowns, large hats — which were symbolic of one’s status in society. Portraits of Britain’s Queen Elizabeth 1 depicted her decked in elaborate dresses that completely obscured her body. The peasant class, on the other hand, wore functional clothes sans the exaggeration. Even today, gargantuan sleeves are worn by the fashion-conscious consumer, reiterating the cyclical nature of fashion.
