From its science-backed approach to hair health to its game-changing designs, Dyson has made us all rethink what beauty tech can do.
To break it all down, I caught up with Kathleen Pierce, Dyson’s beauty spokesperson and self-confessed hair health fanatic. Over coffee (and a not-so-secret envy of her blowout), we chatted about the brand’s ethos, the future of beauty, and what makes Dyson’s products more than just pretty tools.
“Let’s talk innovation,” I began. “Dyson is synonymous with cutting-edge engineering—how does that translate into beauty?”

Kathleen smiled, clearly in her element. “Innovation is in our DNA. Take the Dyson Digital Motor V9—it’s the tiny but mighty heart of our Supersonic Hair Dryer and Airwrap Multi-Styler. It was designed to be smaller and faster so it could sit in the handle rather than the head. That one tweak completely changed how hairdryers feel to hold.”
She paused to sip her latte, then added: “And it’s not just the motor. We’ve developed testing methods to measure frizz, shine, and smoothness across all hair types. That level of obsession ensures our products don’t just work—they work brilliantly.”
But it’s not just tech for tech’s sake. Dyson’s products have a distinct aesthetic, so I asked how they balance form and function.
“Form always follows function,” Kathleen explained. “We’re bold in our technology, so we’re bold in our designs. Every colour or material serves a purpose—like highlighting key features or making the product ergonomic. The Supersonic, for instance, isn’t just stylish; it’s designed to make styling easier and lighter on your arms. It’s beauty and practicality in one sleek package.”

“These were a natural step for us,” Kathleen said. “We’ve been studying hair science for years—everything from scalp health to how humidity affects different textures. These styling products combat common problems, like crunchiness from polymers, by offering flexible hold and shine instead. They work for all hair types and even tackle high humidity—perfect for Mumbai mornings!”
Of course, no beauty chat is complete without touching on sustainability. Dyson, it seems, has a lot to say here too.
“We’ve always practised lean engineering,” Kathleen explained. “That means using materials sparingly and designing products to last. With Chitosan, we took it further—refillable packaging, precision applicators to prevent waste, and formulas that are super concentrated, so a little goes a long way. We’re constantly looking for ways to innovate responsibly.”
