All Brides-To-Be Should Know About These Four Hair Treatments

hai treatments

Be it frizz, hair loss, scanty hair, bald patches and more – there’s no hair concern these days that can’t be tackled with the help of professionals, cosmetologists and dermatologists. So, if you’re prepping for your big day and want your crowning glory to shine through, read on to know the four most sought-after hair treatments…

PRP Hair Treatment

Platelet-rich plasma treatments have become increasingly popular for the skin and now, hair too, where it tackles hair loss. But what is PRP exactly? For the uninitiated, the process of PRP entails the collection of a small sample of the patient’s own blood. It is then activated and injected as micro-injections into the dermis of the skin in an evenly spaced manner.

Dr Andrea Castelino, Consultant Dermatologist at DermaZeal Clinic explains how this works, “When there is hair loss, a concentration of platelets that are rich in platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), and Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF) activates the stem cells within the hair follicles, promoting the stimulation of new follicles and increases blood flow to the follicles.” She shares that four weeks after the first PRP session, one can observe improvements in hair thickness and newly developing hair; the best results are observed following four to six PRP sessions. These can be spaced one month apart. “It’s ideal to start PRP six months before the big day for optimum improvement. It is advisable to schedule the first session three weeks in advance if it needs to be scheduled immediately before a significant occasion,” says Dr Andrea.

PRP hair treatments have no downtime and do not restrict one from performing their daily activities after the procedure. However, mild pain or redness might be present for 1-2 days following the procedure, which will be treated by your dermatologist.

Hair Botox

For brides-to-be dealing with unruly hair or frizz, hair botox is a great option. A relatively newer hair care treatment hair botox strengthens the hair while eliminating frizz. Rajesh D’Souza, Director at MK Professional, a leading hair botox and haircare brand, says, “Hair Botox will help hair elasticity and strengthen your hair. It will prevent hair from getting dry and damaging due to thermal heat like ironing and styling during the wedding.”

Rajesh recommends brides getting hair botox about a month before the big day. For brides who worry that their hair will look limp and flat, with this treatment, Rajesh points out, “Hair botox is not a hair straightening treatment, but a repair treatment, so get it done if you are dealing damaged hair. It can be customised depending upon the hair types and desired look by clients.”

For post-honeymoon care too, Rajesh advises getting hair treatments like express hair botox or a hair spa once you return, in case you’ve gone swimming in pools or at the beach because chlorine and salt water tend to dry up your hair and strip moisture from it.

Scalp Micropigmentation

If you’re conscious about certain scanty patches around your hairline or elsewhere on the scalp, micropigmentation can be the simple answer. This is done by physically depositing pigments on the scalp to simulate the appearance of hair follicles. Certified Trichologist and Cosmetologist, Dr Pooja Chhabra and Co-founder, Nuskay Skincare, says, “This can be a great option for brides dealing with scanty hair or bald patches. It provides an immediate cosmetic solution, creating the appearance of fuller hair and addressing any concerns about the scalp’s appearance.”

The benefits of scalp micro-pigmentation are many. “It provides a realistic and natural-looking solution. It is low maintenance and requires minimal upkeep compared to other options. It also helps boost confidence and enhances self-esteem by addressing hair loss concerns. You can also camouflage scars and it is thus effective in concealing scars from previous hair transplant procedures,” says Dr Pooja.

She recommends undergoing scalp micro-pigmentation at least 2-3 months before the wedding. This allows time for any potential touch-ups or adjustments that may be needed, ensuring the final result aligns with the bride’s expectations.

Each session usually takes 4-5 hours, but the exact duration depends on the complexity and extent of the area being treated. The number of sessions required depends on the individual’s specific needs and the extent of hair loss. “Typically, two to three sessions are common, three to four weeks apart. This allows for the gradual buildup of pigment to achieve a natural look.”

While scalp micro-pigmentation is generally safe, there may be some mild side effects. These can include temporary redness, swelling, or discomfort at the treatment site. Infection and allergic reactions are rare but possible, emphasising the importance of proper hygiene and selecting a reputable practitioner.

Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT)

Dealing with hair loss or thinning hair? Then LLLT may be the hair treatment you need. LLLT is a modern non-surgical, non-invasive hair loss treatment that uses laser light to stimulate cell growth and supercharge hair follicles. Dr. Madhuri Agarwal, Founder and Medical Director of Yavana Aesthetics says, “Studies have shown hair loss control and hair growth results with LLLT. There is an increase in hair follicles due to LLLT stimulating the stem cells that help to regrow new hair. LLLT also boosts the scalp circulation. This provides more oxygen and nutrients to the hair follicles, thus increasing the hair growth.”

Done by certified professional at dermatologist or trichologist clinics, low energy wavelength laser is used to stimulate hair follicles. This is applied to the scalp and left for a recommended time. The scalp should be clean and dry (non-greasy) for the therapy.

Who would benefit from LLLT? Anyone facing temporary hair loss i.e., telogen effluvium will see faster recovery with LLLT. “It is also a good add-on to or can be combined with other treatment modalities in the male or female pattern hair loss. It is FDA-approved for this kind of hair loss. But it is not a single solution or a sole treatment for male or female pattern hair loss. It should be avoided in bald areas as it will not stimulate hair growth.”

Generally, 8-10 sittings are recommended and the cost of treatment varies from Rs. 3000-5000 per session, shares Dr Madhuri. For brides-to-be she says, “It is advisable to start the sessions at least three months before the big day. This will show visible results with respect to hair loss and hair quality improvement. The great thing is there is no downtime with this treatment. It is a quick and safe treatment.”
