Ageing gracefully is what we are really after and while cutting-edge treatments and high-end products can certainly help, sometimes the most effective solutions are surprisingly simple. Through the years we have had the privilege of speaking to the best of the best when it comes to skincare, and when we’ve spoken to them about anti-ageing – it has always been the simplest of things and consistently keeping up with those tiny habits and changes that have made the largest impact. Well, we’ve combined all of those recommendations right here.
1. Sun protection, always
Every dermatologist will tell you that sunscreen is your best defence against ageing. UV rays accelerate skin ageing by breaking down collagen and causing pigmentation. Applying sunscreen daily, regardless of the weather, is non-negotiable. It’s the simplest yet most effective anti-ageing step.
2. The power of antioxidants
A diet rich in antioxidants fights off free radicals, those pesky molecules that speed up ageing. Berries, nuts, and leafy greens are packed with antioxidants. Incorporating these into your meals not only benefits your skin but also boosts your overall health. It’s a win-win!
3. PM is for retinol
Retinoids are celebrated in the dermatology world for their ability to increase cell turnover and boost collagen. Adding a retinoid to your nightly skincare routine can dramatically improve skin texture and reduce fine lines. It’s a powerhouse ingredient that delivers visible results over time.
(We recommend: The Ordinary Granactive Retinoid 2% Emulsion)
4. Hydrate and then hydrate some more
Drinking plenty of water and using hydrating skincare products maintain skin elasticity and suppleness. Think of hydration as the foundation of all your skincare efforts. Without it, your skin can’t function optimally.
5. Try and sleep on your back
Sleeping on your back prevents sleep lines and reduces pressure on your face, minimising wrinkles. Switching your sleep position can be tough, take it from a chronic side-sleeper, but it’s worth it. This move doesn’t just prevent wrinkles but the germs on our pillowcases (you know the ones that develop because we claim to change the cases every week but we just don’t?) also don’t touch the skin, and the overnight products you apply also get ample time to seep into your skin instead of rubbing off.
6. Activity is important
Regular exercise increases blood circulation, which promotes healthy, glowing skin. Exercise isn’t just about fitness; it’s about improving skin health too. Increased blood flow nourishes skin cells and keeps them vital. Plus, it’s a great stress reliever! I am telling you this and also treating this as a note to self, we will start this one together.
7. Cut the sugar
Reducing sugar intake can prevent glycation, damaging collagen and elastin. Sugar molecules bind to proteins in your skin, leading to stiffness and loss of elasticity. Cutting back on sugar helps maintain your skin’s youthful bounce and glow. Enjoy natural sugars from fruits.
Didn’t we say these were simple? Anti-ageing isn’t about stopping a natural process, but slowing it down while making the most of the journey These lifestyle changes do just that, but also make you feel amazing overall. And that, honestly, is the main goal.
