For the Valentino Autumn/Winter 22 collection, Pierpaolo Piccioli showcased 40 different silhouettes, all in one shade—hot pink. His idea was to shift the focus on the details of each garment—shape, style, neckline and surface ornamentation. But why pink? it’s a colour long associated with everything feminine, which is exactly the trope Pierpaolo intended to subvert. Throughout his presentation, both men, women and even the backdrop matched the power pink parade. So much so that, Pierpaolo’s pink has been added to Pantone’s official colour range under the name of ‘Pink PP’.
During Valentino Garvani’s illustrious era, red was the signature colour of the couture house for the longest time. While its historical association with red remains intact, Pierpaolo has managed to introduce a new trademark colour in the Valentino vocabulary. Tapping into the world of millennials, his choice of colour caters to the fashion aficionados but also fascinates the feminists as he has taken a stereotypical womanly shade and has turned it into a political statement of beauty.
Ever since the collection hit the runway, Valentino loyalists a.k.a your favourite celebrities have been sporting this hue at various events. From Zendaya debuting the colour of the season at the show itself to Gigi Hadid and Glenn Close attending various New York Gala’s in them—and not to forget, the leading men of the industry have been repping it too.
1. Gigi Hadid
