Does anyone else ever get that sudden urge to get your life together in the middle of the night? The first two weeks of a new year feel just like that. There’s renewed enthusiasm in the air and the josh is ‘high sir!’ It’s a great time to set your goals for the months ahead and plunge into new beginnings. Take a break from the doomscrolling and invest your energies in learning a new skill. Here are some fun and more creative hobbies to dip your toes into in 2022:
Longboarding

A longboard as the name suggests is longer than a traditional skateboard (that is usually between 30 and 33 inches). Longboards range from 33 inches all the way up to 60 inches. Skateboards are associated more with tricks while longboards are for cruising. The longer and wider base makes it easier to maintain balance, especially for beginners. And of course, the added benefit of adding this to your creative hobbies list is that you get to cruise along, while people have to like…walk.
Flow Arts

A therapeutic way of self-expression, flow arts consist of a variety of movement-based disciplines like poi & staff spinning, hula hooping, contact juggling and other forms of object manipulation. Described as moving meditation, practising a flow art can help you achieve present-moment awareness referred to as the ‘flow state.’ Creative hobbies with the added benefit of mental health check all the boxes for me.
Learn A New Musical Instrument

From the guitar and ukelele to the drums and bongos, there are a variety of options to choose from. We recommend trying out the kalimba which is a modern version of the ancient African instrument mbira and is easy to learn. It consists of a wooden soundboard and attached metal tines that are plucked to produce a soothing sound.
Floral Arrangement
Relaxing and rewarding, practising the art of floristry is a great way to express yourself creatively. Start by learning the basics about flowers and understanding the techniques to cut, condition and preserve them. You can make floral arrangements for everything from your home decor to gifting bouquets. This is one of those creative hobbies that I see myself turning into a business.
Hand Lettering
Merging calligraphy with more modern fonts, hand lettering is a soothing craft that uses brush-tipped pens and markers instead of pointed nibs. It’s all about controlling the pressure to create strokes. Incredibly calming and fairly easy to learn, it allows you to explore and develop your own personal style with just a little bit of practice.
Needlework
With sustainability and upcycling becoming the way forward, needlecrafts are wonderful hobbies to pick up. Crochet, knitting, embroidery and more are not only fun ways to produce something unique and useful but also are great stress busters. And hey, another one of those creative hobbies where you get to create something beautiful.
Building Terrariums
Want to try out gardening but not ready for the commitment? Try building a terrarium. Terrariums are miniature gardens inside sealable containers like jars and bottles that are generally self-sustaining with very little care on your part. It’s a great DIY project for plant lovers.
