A few days ago, Emily Ratajkowski celebrated her 32nd birthday and posted adorable pics on Instagram of bringing it in. As cute as those shots were, what caught our eyes as beauty fans, was the gorgeous red eyeliner she was wearing! Pairing smoked-out edges and a red shimmery lower lash line and inner corners with her sassy black leather LBD, she totally owned the look. Now as much as we love our kohl and winged black liner, we definitely want to try our hands at this trend too, but there’s so much that could go wrong with red eyeliner. For starters, you could end up looking like you’ve got a pink eye.
We spoke to Celebrity & Bridal Makeup Artist Sadhna Singh, who works with actors such as Mrunal Thakur, Samantha Ruth Prabhu, Kajal Aggarwal among others, to get her expert advice on doing it right. Sadhna says, “Red is a stunning, bold colour. People should experiment with this liner but yes, they need to know the correct way to wear it or it can go all wrong.” And that’s what we worry about! So, how do we ensure wearing red eyeliner or eye pencil without looking like we’ve got conjunctivitis?! “The best way to wear red eyeliner to avoid looking like you have any eye infection is to max out your mascara,” says Sadhna. She also advises not using it on the water line, which can make it look like an infection or illness.
“I would say a red eye pencil works best on the top lid, and you can use a thin angular brush to make the liner look sharper at the edge. You can even use a liquid liner; it all depends on what you’re comfortable with. I use pencil on clients or actors because it’s easy for me, but when it comes to applying for self, I would prefer liquid.” For the lower lash line, she suggests shading and smudging it out, rather than going very heavy on the red.
“The great thing about red eyeliner is that it can work on any skin type. No matter what skin colour you have, red works in harmony with brown or black eye colour,” says Sadhna. She points out that red’s not just for parties or evenings out, but she loves a shimmery red eyeliner for pre-wedding functions on her brides too!
Now if you’re wondering whether or not to invest in a red eye pencil and had the same thought as we did, fret not, because we quizzed her on whether we could use red lip liners as eyeliners. “You can use lip liners as an eyeliner but top it with powder eyeshadow so it doesn’t start to spread out due to sweat or an oily lid. It’s the same trick that we use for kajal to not spread from the lower lash line, just dab an eyeshadow of that same colour on top to lock it in.”
Handy Tips When Wearing Red Eyeliner:
- Swipe on a neutral brown eyeshadow on the eyelid and then go in with a red eye pencil and smoke it out for a soft, wearable look that’s not too stark.
- Red always pairs beautifully well with gold, so try a rich gold eyeshadow with your red eyeliner for celebratory events or that girl’s night out!
- If you want to go all out, you can also pair red eyeliner with hot red lips and yes, even red blush. Just ensure you’ve worn enough mascara, like Sadhna pointed out, and your eyebrows are fluffy and well-groomed so that it frames the face perfectly.
- Red a such a fun, playful yet girl-boss colour, so don’t be afraid to experiment with a graphic eye or a sharp winged look too.
