We all love to escape our busy realities with a good dose of entertainment. Single folks, like me, can only grumble about our dull lives because the men who make us go giggling like teenage girls with their screen appearance are hard to find in real life. Such men simply prove Jane from Austenland’s famous dialogue: ‘I am single, because apparently, all good men are fictional’, quite aptly gathering cheers from women across the globe.
Why is there, then, to this day, an otherworldly obsession with a romantic partner who doesn’t exist? The answer might lie in the pursuit of the ideal. Throughout the history of romantic portrayal in the media, be it print and subsequently film, the ideal compassionate and subtly heroic man is a semi-godly figure, possessing a mix of virtues it might be impossible for any human to attain. And yet, we fall for them time and again.
If I talk about my relationship with these fictional men, I might consider myself quite a player because my ‘Too All The Boys I Have Loved Before’ list keeps increasing every week. Growing up, the first person to charm me was Shah Rukh Khan‘s iconic character of Rahul from Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, which slowly progressed from Disney men like Flynn Ryder or Prince Eric to now a long list of adorable K-drama men.
