Period pain getting you down? Pop a Panadol. Sore throat? Codral me up. We’ve been wired to manage feelings of pain and discomfort with medication since birth, but with the wellbeing wave further cementing its place in society, there’s an abundance of healing foods on the market that claim to help treat the aforementioned symptoms just as effectively, if not better than common meds. To set things straight, some local health experts weigh in on the benefits of raiding your farmer’s market over the script counter at your local chemist.
“Components of foods have shown promising results for healing ailments that are usually treated with medications, such [as] omega-3 fatty acids (from oily fish) for depression, and curcumin (from turmeric) for osteoarthritis,” reveals Kate Callaghan, holistic nutritionist, author of Holistic Nutrition: Eat Well, Train Smart & Be Kind To Your Body, personal trainer and lifestyle coach. “However one should always discuss these options with their healthcare provider, and should not go off any medications without seeking advice from their doctor,” she continues.
Naturopath Simone Jeffries also supports the food-as-medicine approach. “It’s estimated that 70 per cent of the diseases we have today can be prevented by eating a wholefood diet, free of processed food, additives and preservatives. It doesn’t matter what condition the person has, there are always food changes that can improve their health dramatically. Most medications are not necessary when you eat well,” she reveals. Here are five of the therapeutic favourites, and we bet at least one of them is already in your pantry.
