Our first memory of ribbons and bows as Indian girls has to be of them as ornaments on our strongly oiled, braids from our school days. A hairstyle we wouldn’t be caught flaunting today. But every fashion trend has revived over time, despite us turning our nose up at it and this frilly accessory has resurfaced this year with a much-needed upgrade. You could blame it on the balletcore and couquettecore splash everywhere. Our fashion explore page is having a ribbon-renaissance era. From hair clips to neck chokers to tote bags to bracelets to replacing shoelaces, ribbons are being slapped everywhere, and admittedly, they look adorable and preppy.

If we do a history check in real life and pop culture, ribbons and bows have always been a major fashion accessory and have been worn by multiple period drama icons among genders. For example, everyone’s book boyfriend, Mr. Darcy, to the queen of France, Marie Antonie. Marie Antonie’s influence on this particular trend is still hot, which got a touch-up thanks to the Bridgerton series.
Runway and Red Carpet Takeover
Every fashion trend needs the runway’s stamp of approval to be an IT trend, and in the past fashion weeks, there were plenty of ribbon takeovers in every versatile way possible. Ribbons were a key component of Mirror Palais’s springtime vision. Their showcase had several shapes and looks of the trend. Some of the models had satin ribbons knotted around their necks, while a few wore bows and hair ribbons. And if we have to give a honorary mention to making this trend mainstream, it would go to the British designer Simone Roccha, who didn’t only make ribbons feminine and artsy but also started a crochet cult with her designs.
Along with the runways, this year’s red carpet is also witnessing the ribbon resurge, especially the Met Gala carpet. Bows made an appearance in every best-dressed A-list celebrity’s outfit, be it on BLACKPINK‘s Jennie’s Chanel mini dress, pop icon Billie Eillish’s hairdo, Priyanka Chopra’s massive bow on a Valentino ensemble, or Sydney Sweeney’s embellished mermaid-style Miu-Miu gown, which was accentuated by big black bows near the bottom of the ensemble and in her hair.
The best part about this trend is how affordable it is to recreate it in multiple ways. The trend is at an all-time high due to its perfect combination with the chilly weather lookbook. So, in case you want to hop onto the ribbon and bow trend bandwagon, here are some celebrity-approved ways to add them to your outfits:
Classic Half Clip
A hairdo that might never go out of style. Take notes from Khushi Kapoor, who is often lensed in this hairstyle done by Marce Pedrozo. She is serving Gen Z Blair Waldorf energy.
Bow-Necks
Thai star Jeff Satur may have sung his hit ballad Black Tie, but he is now experimenting with this new trend and giving his Valentino tie a break. A chic replacement for those pintresty pearl necklaces.
More Is More
As the great Iris Apfel says, more is more, less is bore, something the Driver’s Licence singer would agree with. Olivia Rodrigo has nailed the ribbon and bow trend on multiple occasions, but her look takes the cake. Straight out of Bridgeton, this Bad Sheep Corset from luxury brand Fanci Club’s Fall/Winter 2021 collection, styled with opera gloves, was her fashion diamond moment.
Christmas Tree But Fashion
Ribbons and bows on Christmas trees are festive staples. This black and pink look of Rosé gives off a romantic illusion of it, something you can recreate with your existing LBD.
Cape It Up
The B in the bow stands for Barbie. Spotted at the 33rd Annual Gotham Awards, Margot Robbie showed us how to style a see-through cape over a dress-inspired Black Magic Ensemble from 1964 Barbie with a bow knot.
