The year is 2018. Kareena Kapoor is walking the finale for Monisha Jaising at Lakmē Fashion Week, and I am forever changed to a fangirl for her diverse sensibility as a designer. Jaising has propelled herself as a new-age contemporary in the fashion landscape further and further since then – be it couture or classic Indian-wear, she’s done it all.
She’s now building blocks up on her previous cruise-inspired collection, titled rightly as Sailing Bride 2.0. With pieces that boast of adaptability and luxe comfort, the varied repertoire aims to fulfil the demands of today’s modern bride. Here’s our conversation with Monisha Jaising about all things inspiration and her evolution over the years.
ELLE: Can you give us a peek into the name and the inspiration for your much-awaited new collection?
Monisha Jaising: Sailing Bride 2.0 is a continuation of a journey that began with my 2017 collection, showcased on a luxury cruise liner in Mumbai. This new collection is inspired by the perfect balance of luxury, tranquillity, and adventure that I love about the yacht lifestyle. The collection boasts versatility and key pieces that can transition seamlessly from lounging on the deck during the day to enjoying an elegant evening under the stars. It is a celebration of a lifestyle that is both luxurious and intimately connected to the natural world, embodying the elegance, freedom, and serenity that comes with sailing on open waters.
ELLE: What are the silhouettes, colour palettes, and embellishments utilised in Sailing Bride 2.0?
Monisha Jaising: We’ve focused on sheer kurtas and flowy kaftans to capture the essence of effortless elegance, perfect for luxurious yacht escapes. I’ve worked with silk and satin for their soft drape and a luminous glow in the sunlight, while sheer chiffon and organza offer a hint of allure, subtly revealing swimwear underneath. The soft, ocean-inspired hues reflect the calm of the sea. For formal occasions, my signature 2024-2025 co-ord sets with full embellishment provide a modern alternative to traditional gowns. This includes cropped tops with high-waisted skirts adorned with sequins and beads, as well as embellished bralettes paired with wide-leg pants. Monochrome embellished sets deliver a striking, high-impact look, perfect for evening events, with shimmering details that elevate any outfit.
ELLE: In what ways does this collection signify a departure and evolution from your previous ones?
Monisha Jaising: While my design philosophy is deeply rooted in timeless elegance, the strength of Sailing Bride 2.0 lies in its ability to push boundaries while staying true to my core aesthetic. This collection embraces a new sense of fluidity and versatility, blending the laid-back luxury of yacht life with high-fashion sensibilities. It’s a step forward in creating pieces that not only radiate glamour but are also effortlessly wearable. I’ve introduced lighter, more breathable fabrics and silhouettes that offer freedom and movement, reflecting the ever-changing desires of today’s modern bride. It’s this balance of consistency in vision with a fresh, contemporary edge that keeps my collections both relevant and exciting.
ELLE: If pieces from your new collection were to be styled in an iconic Bollywood movie, which one would it be and why?
Monisha Jaising: I envision my collection styled in The Great Gambler. The film’s captivating mix of glamour and adventure, set against a backdrop of high-stakes drama, aligns seamlessly with the breezy, elegant vibe of our new collection. The stylish and bold looks of the characters reflect the spirit of the modern bride, who balances sophistication with a playful edge. This collection would add to the film’s vibrant atmosphere, embodying a sense of luxury and excitement throughout the storyline.
ELLE: Is there a yesteryear Hollywood muse who would do justice to this collection?
Monisha Jaising: Brigitte Bardot would be the ideal muse, embodying an enchanting mix of classic allure and carefree spirit that perfectly reflects the essence of this collection. Her timeless style is both captivating and memorable.
