When I think of Prateek Kuhad, I immediately recall the slow melodies and raw emotions that define his music—stories of love and loss that have been part of my playlist for years. It’s quite remarkable to consider that someone I’ve listened to so often is now making waves in the indie music scene and paving the way for new artists.
His journey from a niche musician to a global star is truly one for the books. A standout moment in his career that increased his fan following has to be when Barack Obama featured his track Cold/Mess on his summer playlist. That boost not only skyrocketed his fame but also showcased how indie music can break into mainstream culture.
Now, as I sit down to interview him, I’m reminded of how his success has inspired countless indie artists. Kuhad demonstrates that music is all about storytelling and how mere words can connect people across the globe.
When discussing musical influences, Kuhad highlighted Elliott Smith as a pivotal figure in his songwriting journey. “Elliott’s storytelling and emotional depth really resonate with me,” he reflected. The raw honesty in Smith’s work has significantly inspired Kuhad, encouraging him to explore themes of love, loss, and vulnerability in his own songs. This connection to Smith’s music has shaped not only Kuhad’s songwriting but also his approach to connecting with his audience on a deeper level.
Currently, Kuhad is channelling his energy into his own music. “I’m focusing on my work amidst a busy touring schedule,” he shared. Talking about his ongoing Silhouettes Tour, he mentioned that one standout track has been Tere Hi Hum.
In the midst of the interview, I couldn’t help but ask him about his favourite coffee because, if I had to match his music with a beverage, it would have to be coffee in all its forms. He shared, “My coffee order depends on the time of day. If it’s my first coffee of the day, I like it plain black—no cream, no sugar. Later in the day, I might opt for a latte.”
While his songs are always on repeat on my playlist, I was curious about his most-played tracks. He mentioned Sweet Tides by Thievery Corporation, anything by Adrian Lenker, and I’m In Love With You by The 1975. Each of these songs resonates with him in different ways, reflecting his eclectic taste and the diverse influences that inspire his writing.
On a more personal note, when I asked about films that have recently moved him, Kuhad mentioned the poignant film Past Lives. “That was the last movie where I really cried,” he admitted. I couldn’t help but agree—so many of his songs could perfectly fit into that film. Calling Celine Song to add some of his tracks ASAP!
Lastly, regarding his upcoming projects, fans will need to stay tuned. “I don’t have any set plans right now. I’m still working on music, and hopefully, something will be out soon,” he shared, hinting at an exciting future ahead.
