I’m certain that I’m not the only one who’s always gushing over Tara Sutaria’s naturally soft makeup. The credit for this goes to her makeup artist, Shraddha Inder Mehta aka ‘The Makeup Maven’. Going by her feed, it’s safe to say that a clean base and healthy flush of colour on the face are her go-to looks. Shraddha, who also created makeup looks for Mira Rajput-Kapoor and Sanjana Sanghi, comes along with a vanity full of beauty tips, tricks and hacks. So naturally, we had to sit down with her and get her to spill a few guarded secrets with us.

ELLE: What has it been like working in the film industry?

Shraddha: It took me a while to enter this industry because I started my career from scratch. However, I strongly believe that the only way up in any industry, especially Bollywood, is by learning everything on the job. Though a tough start, I began my career by assisting several celebrity makeup artists. I picked up so many tricks of the trade along the way, tricks that weren’t limited to beauty, but also otherwise. I’ve learnt that the key to being successful as a makeup artist is also knowing how to present yourself. My journey so far has been nothing short of exciting and fruitful, it’s been a long one but I wouldn’t have it any other way!

ELLE: So, what are a few crucial things you’ve learnt along the way?

Shraddha: As someone who’s been in this industry for a while now, one of the most crucial things I’ve learnt is that figuring out how to deal with an ego is of utmost importance, staying grounded and humble no matter where you are will take you to heights. Another thing is that there’s so much to learn every single day! The beauty industry is constantly evolving—there are skincare and makeup trends that arrive almost every day, and new products with different formulas are launched all the time — and I’m learning something new all the time. So one should definitely always be open to learning more in this industry.

ELLE: What is that one makeup trend you don’t wish to see again?

Shraddha: I think a bunch of people will agree with me when I say that I wish skinny brows stay where they belong—in the past! Eyebrows are such an integral part of the look and so they need to be filled in and shaped to perfection, as per your face. I’m always going to be ‘Team Fuller Brows’!

ELLE: What are your thoughts about beauty trends and what do you predict for 2023?

Shraddha: You know, as a celebrity makeup artist it’s so refreshing to see new beauty trends all the time. And the best part is, each one is different and unique. Personally, I loved the whole rhinestone and embezzled makeup trend that took off a while ago. Rhinestones and gems are such an easy way to dazzle up a makeup look, even when you want to keep the base minimal. In 2023, I think fluffy eyebrows are going to make it big! Soap brows had their moment in the past, but well-tamed fluffy eyebrows are going to have a moment this year.

ELLE: What is one go-to makeup look that you get asked to create?

Shraddha: One look at my Instagram feed will tell you that I’m a staunch believer in ‘less is more’. I always give the most importance to skincare prep before makeup, because that is what will ultimately ensure your makeup looks flawless all day long. My go-to makeup look is something timeless that looks striking at the same time. Brown eyeshadow always does the trick of making your eyes pop along with some lengthening mascara. A dewy pink blush and a warm bronzer are my favourites when it comes to adding some colour to the face.

ELLE: If your client had only 5 minutes to do their makeup, what are some tips you would give them?

Shraddha: The first one would definitely be to moisturise properly! I can’t stress enough on the importance of skincare before makeup. Next, opt for some quick concealing with a concealer that matches your skin tone. The under-eye area, blemishes and spots near the nose be concealed. Next, fill up your eyebrows with an eyebrow pencil. No makeup look is complete without some blush, opt for a liquid blush because they’re easier to work with when you’re in a hurry! Add a tinted lip balm to the mix, and you’re all set.

ELLE: If you had to recommend only 3 products, what would they be?

Shraddha: Sunscreen is an absolute must, even better if it’s a hydrating sunscreen. Cream or liquid blushes are a great product to have on the go because they’re so easy to use. You should also always have a lip balm with you at all times!

ELLE: One celebrity you’d love to work with?

Shraddha: This has to be Alia Bhatt. I’m a huge fan of how her makeup is always so minimalist, soft and beautiful. I’d love to work on her some

ELLE: One piece of advice you would give other makeup artists?

Shraddha: Practising your art will take you to places! When you don’t have clients, practice different techniques and trends on your friends! As a makeup artist, building a kit with great quality products will impact your work positively!
